Using the power of animation to bring to life the barriers faced by those with hearing loss.
CLIENT: RNID
PROJECT: CASE FOR SUPPORT ANIMATION
RNID came to us looking for a creative partner to help them develop an animated film that would bring their cause to life.
Groundbreaking new research from RNID had identified just how lonely and isolating hearing loss can be. 1 in 3 adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss, or tinnitus and every day they encounter barriers in society that make them feel discriminated against, alienated and as if they don’t matter.
Our creative solution was to develop a visual metaphor - a bubble - to represent the growing frustration and exclusion felt by people with hearing loss who live in a society that creates barriers for them. The feeling of being present but excluded. Of being close to the action, yet just out of ‘touching' distance.
The script and the scenarios chosen were inspired by a myriad of real-life experiences, told through the story of our main character, Joe. From missing his name being called out in a coffee shop, to not hearing his baby call ‘Dada,’ we brought to life Joe’s experience of life’s moments from the routine to the most precious.
As Joe becomes more and more isolated from his world, the bubble grows until Joe starts to find himself almost completely excluded from society. The film ends with Joe being brought back to life’s party thanks to the power of RNID’s work, inviting viewers to join together with RNID and help build a more inclusive world.
For production, we collaborated with Arc Studio to develop an emotive, authentic, human animation style.
The film has been created for use across a range of channels, from RNID’s website to social channels, supporter emails, and even corporate and major giving fundraising events.
