Video production at Mere Mortals
Video projects come in all shapes and sizes.
We could be shooting a TVC (like we did for Diabetes UK), travelling across the UK to capture stories (like we did for Samaritans), or capturing an event (like we did for Together Type 1).
To give you an idea of the level of production, processes involved and budgets required to deliver your video project, we’ve outlined three packages below. As each shoot is unique, these three packages prove a great starting point from which we can refine our approach and budget based on a full understanding of your brief and requirements.
What is always included, no matter the size of the production:
An introduction to the team to discuss your brief
A strategy session to ensure your videos are going to be as effective as possible
Creative development, including scripts and storyboarding where required
Pre-production, planning all shoot logistics
3x rounds of amends in post-production
Delivery of final assets (and access to RAW files if desired)
A Senior Producer overseeing production from kick off to delivery
A clear schedule, and feedback forms
Medium production
Typically a multi day/week long shoot across various locations. We’ll put together a medium sized crew consisting of a Director, DoP, Lighting assistant, Sound Op and a photographer to capture stills. Shoots of this scale can use multiple cameras and specialist equipment. Edits, titles and motion graphics are often finished in-house, however specialist editors or animators can be used depending on the production needs. Colour grade and audio mixing are typically handled by external specialists for these productions.
Medium productions are typically used to capture multi-person case study projects, scripted campaign videos, online brand films and content for social campaigns.
Typical budget range for a medium production = £15k - £30k
Key considerations when putting together a production:
Complexity - The complexity and scale of the shoot is the main factor that affects budget. The more days shooting, crew, equipment, different locations, cast, set build the larger the budget required.
Duration - The duration of the final film, or films, also plays a big part in the cost. For example a 3 minute documentary style video requires less production and edit time than a long form film such as a 30 minute feature. Saying that, a 30-second TVC will most likely be more expensive than both due to the complexity and level of finish required.
Deliverables - Simply put, the more videos and variants we create, the more time is required to produce them. However, it’s often worth planning production in a way that allows you to efficiently create multiple assets from each shoot, giving options for social, web and other touch points with your audience.
Our production tiers
Simple production
Typically a one or two day shoot, with a small crew consisting of a single Creative Producer, or a Creative Producer and DoP. A photographer may also be present, depending on requirements.
Simple productions are typically used to capture case study films and interviews either on location or in a studio, or events and conferences and short scripted social content. Edits, titles and any simple motion graphics are finished in-house, with a professional colour grade and audio mix completed externally if required.
Typical budget range for a simple production =
£5k - £15k
Complex Production
Typically, these productions are part of a larger brand or fundraising campaign.
For a project of this scale, we’ll be your dedicated Creative Agency, working with you to develop the strategy and creative on the project, then often reaching out to one of our specialist production partner agencies to partner on production. These projects often involve a large crew, including specialists such as gaffers, cam ops, hair and makeup etc. For post production, we’ll collaborate with some of the best Editors, Animators, Colour Specialists and Audio Engineers to ensure the highest quality final product. We can deliver up to broadcast standard delivery if required, handling the onlining process, ensuring that everything is delivered ready for your broadcast.
Complex productions often include TVCs, multi-channel campaigns and more complex scripted productions.
Typical budget range for a complex production starts at £30k +
Can we work together with a smaller budget?
It’s definitely worth getting in contact to ask us, especially for simple shoots like a talking head interview or a simple location shoot, or if just photography is required.
